What is a Mental Health Occupational therapist?
OT’s that specilise in mental health can help individuals improve their mental well-being by focusing on meaningful daily activities that promote emotional, psychological, and social health. They assess how mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, or trauma, affect a person’s ability to perform daily tasks and participate in work, social, or recreational activities.
What do Mental Health OT’s do?
Assessment: OTs assess emotional, cognitive, and social functioning to identify barriers to daily life.
Develop Coping Strategies: They teach practical techniques to manage stress, anxiety, and emotional challenges.
Support Routine Building: OTs help establish stable routines and healthy habits, promoting structure and stability in everyday life.
Enhance Social Skills: They work on improving communication and social interaction skills for better community and social participation.
Workplace/School Support: Mental health OTs assist with returning to work or school by providing strategies to manage workloads, stress, and time management.
Holistic Care: They address the mind-body connection, often using mindfulness, relaxation techniques, and lifestyle modifications to support recovery.
