Gross Motor Developement Delay

Gross Motor Developmental Delay is a term used to describe slowed development of muscle groups that control whole-body movements. This delay can cause issues for the daily life of children, and they may also present with increasingly stiff or loose muscles.

Gross motor skills are an important part of a child's everyday life. As children develop, it is important that their gross motor skills develop as this will allow them to complete activities such as walking, running and skipping. Gross motor skills are also closely linked to other skills such as balance, coordination, strength and proprioception.

There are important developmental milestones that children will typically achieve as they grow. Examples of this include:
- 2 months: lifting their head/neck while lying on their stomach
- 6 months: rolling from back to stomach independently
- 9 months: pulling to stand with assistance, beginning to crawl
- 15 months: walking/standing independently
- 18 months: walking up stairs with a handhold support

Delays in gross motor development can be caused by a number of factors. If it appears that your child is having difficulty with achieving any developmental milestones, it is important that the delays are addressed as soon as possible. Treatments for gross motor developmental delay typically involve intervention from both physiotherapy and occupational therapy to address the specific needs to the child.
